With much gratitude to the Bush Foundation ~ Enduring Vision Award,
I had an intensive month in midwinter of this year, of one-on-one tutoring on using a woodturning lathe
from Jim Sannerud, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The newly acquired equipment is now installed in my studio
and I am beginning to use the lathe in combination with the carving that I have
been exploring and growing with over the past decades.
The First Turned Four completed pieces from this training month are shown here,
and in detail on the following page.
Click here to learn about their sizes and materials.

Ready to turn! Ready to carve! This studio has never seen such dust before! There is a
Jet Air Filteration unit suspended from the ceiling for the fine dust, but I still need to get a capture device
for on the spot collection while the tools are in use. There is also a new band saw, a piece of equipment
that will be very handy, though I will miss the thoughtful hours of hand-sawing the dense,
hard, woods and mammoth tusk that I have been carving over the past many years.

Moderately used Jet Mini Lathe. The turning tools are neatly organized in the shelf drawers in the yellow
stack unit. They are full-sized tools, that can do some of the small turning. I look ahead to making and modifying
tools for the wee works that I plan to be making, and to making pieces that are not so wee in size.

A slow-speed grinder for tool sharpening, and a thoughtfully loaned/donated Mercury Nova Mini Lathe for when
additional turning is needed in combination with some pieces in the midst of certan projects.
